Endgame is also the top earner in many countries around the world including Malaysia and our neighbours, Indonesia. According to our sources as Disney Malaysia, Avengers: Endgame has raked in a staggering RM 85.6 million at the Malaysian box office, making it the first ever movie to gross more than RM 80 million locally. This puts the 22nd Marvel Cinematic Universe film miles ahead of the 2nd place Infinity War, which collected around RM 71 million in 2018.
Coming in at 3rd is Furious 7 (approx RM 67 million), followed by the so-surprising-even-The-Rock-sent-a-thank-you-message Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (approx RM 60 million) and Iron Man 3 (approx RM 58 million). James Cameron’s Avatar isn’t amongst the top 15 highest grossing films in Malaysia. Speaking of, at $US 2.68 billion at the global box office, Endgame is still $US 100 million short of beating Avatar ($US 2.78 billion). Here’s what’s interesting. At the North American box office, Endgame ($US 805 million) has already zoomed past Avatar ($US 760 million), but is yet — and is probably unlikely — to beat Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ $US 936.7 million. Outside of North America, Endgame ($US 1.8 billion) is about $US 144 million short of reaching Avatar‘s gross. At this rate, the only way Endgame has a chance of beating Avatar globally is if it makes massive strides outside of North America, particularly in countries like China, South Korea and the UK. Having said that, we have to remember that Avatar was re-released a couple of times after its initial release in 2009.
